Wow! This tutorial took me forever. Some of you know I had to write it twice. I accidentally deleted the first one. These tutorials take a long time to write with all the details and illustrations. I hope I didn't miss anything the second time. I was trying to redo the first one on the rewrite, but decide to make a few changes. That took more screen shots and more time, but I think it was worth it. Hope you learn something new.

There will be two girls, a dog and a cat to go along with this in my Member's Area soon.

This tutorial is not intended for a beginner. You need to have a working knowledge of the PSP program you use. It was written to help show you some of the techniques I use to detail. I am providing you with the selections and giving you directions on some of the ways I detail. Some of the tools I work with are not in versions below 8. However, you can still do the detailing with some changes. I will try to give you some ideas for the versions below 8. Of course, a lot of you may have your own style or way to modify. I haven't used anything other than version 9 for some time now and may not remember all the changes needed.

You need to make sure your Layer Palette if visible (F8)

I left a background layer for you to fill if you would like to. Just delete before merging.

You may want to make a color palette to use as you go. I usually open a New Image size 250x50 and a brush size of 25x25 to blotch my colors on it. Here is an example of how my color palette would look.
colorpalette
I use the Edit Selection a lot so I have it added to my Tool Bar and also on my Layer Palette. You will be using it some (versions8 and up). You may want to customize and add it to your Tool Bar. Right click anywhere - Customize - Commands Tab.
Under Categories select Selections
Under Commands: Grab the Edit Selection and drag to your Tool Bar.

I also Merge Down a lot. I added a shortcut key for this. You can to if you would like. Here's how:
Right click anywhere - Customize if you already closed - Keyboard Tab.
Click on Category drop down arrow and select Layers.
Scroll down Commands to Merge Down and click on.
Click in the Press New Shortcut Key and tap the key you would like to use. I have keys assigned for everything I use alot. I love shortcut keys. For this, I used the Number 8 key on the Number Keypad. All my numbers are assigned something except for 7...lol.
Click Assign then close and your ready to go!

Peering Boy Base
Click on each layer of the Layer Palette and load the cooresponding Alpha Channel selection.
Flood Fill with a color of your choice.
As you put each color on the color palette you create, you may want to leave room beside it for shadow colors.
There is not a selection for the right leg and foot. You will use the left leg and foot after detailing to mirror for the right leg. That will save you a little extra detailing.

Let's get started on the detailing!

Airbrush Settings: Left Foot
Click back on the l foot layer on the Layer Palette.
New Raster Layer Load l foot from the Alpha Channel again.
You may want to drag out your workspace. It makes it easier to work on the areas closer to the edge.

Airbrush - Size 20 with a darker shade than you used for the skin fill around the heel and side as shown.

SAVE

Now for the toes.
New Raster Layer
NOTE I just right click to get rid of the current selection. If you can not do this just Select - None (Ctrl+D) each time you need to drag out selections for detailing.
Drag out an elliptical selection (No feather - Anti-alias checked) as shown.

Airbrush - Size 8 - 9, same shade, just barely tipping the edge where a toe line would show. Do not worry about going over the edge. We will get rid of overspray later.

Use the Edit Selection Tool to move down a little for the next toe.

***Edit Selection Tool***
When you click on it, you will see your selection in red. This shows it is activated. While it is like this, you can use the Mover Tool. Better yet, use the Raster Deformation Tool. You can rotate, skew, size, use all the actions of the Raster Deformation Tool on the selection.
Once you have the selection the way you like it, click back on the Edit Selection Tool to deactivate for use.
Versions under8 will have to drag out a new selection for each.

Airbrush this a little.
Continue until you have all the toes.
SAVE

Load l foot from the Alpha Channel again.
Selections - Invert
Tap the Delete key on your keyboard to get rid of any excess spray.
Merge this down to the airbrush layer. Then merge that down to the l foot layer.
If you didn't create a shortcut key - Right click on the layer on the Layer Palette - Merge - Merge Down

Left Leg
Click on the l leg layer on the Layer Palette.
New Raster Layer
Load l leg from the Alpha Channel again.
Airbrush - Size 35, same shade, on inner and outer side of the leg. The following shows about where I place the airbrush while going around. In some places, I just barely tap at the edge (at knees). Yes, I hit (Ctrl+Z) a lot and redo.

New Raster Layer
Drag out an elliptical shape as shown.

Airbrush - Size 25, same shade, just a little (tap slightly) behind knee.

Select None and airbrush a little right below shorts.
Load l leg from the Alpha Channel again.
Selections - Invert
Tap the Delete key on your keyboard just in case there is any excess spray.
Merge this down to the airbrush layer. Then merge that down to the l leg layer.
Merge down one more time to the l foot layer
Right click on this layer on Layer Palette - Duplicate
Image - Mirror
Move into place for right leg.
SAVE

Head
Click on the head layer on the Layer Palette.
New Raster Layer
Load head from the Alpha Channel again.
Effects - 3D - Cutout New Raster Layer
Drag out an elliptical shape near the left side of the head as shown.

Airbrush - Size 25 same shade or near that you used for the cutout.
Selections - Invert
Airbursh - Same size with a lighter shade than hair fill you used.
Selections - Invert
Edit selection and move the the right and up a little. Repeat the airbrush with darker inside - invert - lighter outside.
For the center you may want to use a rectangular selection.
Again airbrush the inside darker - invert - outside lighter.
I just duplicated this layer - Mirrored - moved into place on the right side and erased the center part on the duplicated layer.
Merged these two layers down to the hair layer on the Layer Palette.
Use the Lighten/Darken Brush if you would like to shadow or highlight more. Experiment!!!

SAVE

Sleeves
Click on the l sleeve layer on the Layer Palette.
New Raster Layer

Load r sleeve from the Alpha Channel again.
Apply Cutout again changing Horizontal to 18.

Shorts
Click on the shorts layer on the Layer Palette.
New Raster Layer
Drag out a rectangle down the center back of the shorts.

Airbrush - Size 50 to right side
Selections - Invert
Airbrush left side.

New Raster Layer
Drag out an elliptical shape as shown:
Versions 8 and up can use the Edit Selection to place and size to the correct spot. Versions below will have to keep trying to get the correct location.

Airbrush - Size 35 with a darker shade of shorts color you used.
Selections - Invert
Airbrush - Size 42 on outside lower part of the circle.
Duplicate this layer - Mirror - Move into place on left side.
SAVE

New Raster Layer
Drag out a rectangle down the center back of the shorts again.
Cutout again with these settings: Drop Shadow with these settings: When I used version under 8, I just duplicated the layer, moved below and used the Drop Shadow on that layer. Then load the Alpha Selection and delete just to have the shadow part if you need to. You may need to Contract 1

Now use the Eraser size around 40 with Hardness at 100 to erase the lighter line as shown. Then lower the Opacity to around 25 and lighten the darker line a little beside where you erased the lighter line. I magnified so you can see this.

Optional - For stitching
Duplicate this layer and move to the left a little.
Eraser Tool - Size 3 - Opacity 100 erase for stitching. Erase everything in the red rectangle on the stitching layer.
SAVE

New Raster Layer
Load shorts from the Alpha Channel again.
Airbrush - Size 40 with the darker shade all the way around the selection.

Keep selection
Now Merge Down all the layers you detail for the shorts down to the shorts, but not including the shorts. You should be one layer above the shorts on the Layer Palette.
Selections - Invert
Tap the Delete key on you keyboard to get rid of all the excess spray.
Select None
Merge Down to shorts layer on the Layer Palette
SAVE

Optional - Add cuffs
Drop Shadow with these settings: Move this layer above the shorts layer on the Layer Palette.
Load shorts from the Alpha Channel again.
Tap the Delete key on your keyboard.
I added Noise 8%.
Select - None
Versions 8 and up You need to unlink these two layers on the Layer Palette. Yours may not show 3. I have a lot of extra layers on mine right now.
Right or Left click to None

Move the cuffs up about 8 to 9 pixels. I use the arrow keys. You want to see a little of the leg shadow showing.
Drop Shadow with these settings: Load shorts from Alpha Channel again.
Selections - Invert
Tap the Delete key on your keyboard.
SAVE

Add stitching to go across the cuffs if you would like to. I used a vector stitch line or solid and use the Eraser Tool to erase. I erased on the first one I did. Then used a line I create for the second one I worked on.

Airbrush - Size 45 with darker shadow color as shown. I increase the Hardness to 20.

Click back on the cuff layer on the Layer Palette.
Use the Magic Wand - Make sure Feather is at 0, Anti-alias checked.
Click anywhere other than on the cuffs.
Now click back on the layer you just airbrushed.
Selections - Invert
Tap the Delete key on your keyboard.
You can Merge all the detail and cuff layers down to the shorts layer on the Layer Palette if you would like to add pockets. I'm going to let you do those on your own.
If you do not want to add anything else, you may delete the background layer and merge visible.
SAVE

I used vectors to create mine. This is what I did.

There will be two girls, a dog and a cat to go along with this in my Member's Area. The girls will be up to you with some detail shots to show what I did, but I'm not going to write out everything. I want you to learn. The dog and cat, I will probable provide most of what you need. I hope to be able to work on these soon.

Well now you know what it takes *smile* to create the tutorials for you. This is what I do after I create the vector shapes and change into selections. The details are left on their own layers for selections. I do merge the details I can to try to keep below 25 selections so they can be loaded from Alpha Channels. Then there is the bit about redoing them to write the tutorial. I also hand code the html. Most tutorials of this type take me between 10 - 20 hours to create. I hope this gives you some idea why tutorial authors reserve the copyright to the creations.

Hope you have enjoyed this tutorial.
