Please make sure you have read them. You may use the image you create as you wish, but the tutorial follows my Terms of Use.

You need to be familiar with PSP, where tools are located, and how to use the Layer Palette - create New Vector Layers and Group. Node editing only on beak and very easy. I'm using Vectors for ease of moving and rotating. I also save images I create as a shape before converting to Raster Layers. I have a tutorial posted at the end if you would like to try this when you are finished.

New Transparent Image 250 x 300

Save in PSP format and name as you wish.

Foreground Black
Background #404040

Tail
Preset Shapes - Tear Drop

  • Anti-alias checked
  • Create as vector checked
  • Solid line
  • Line Width 1
Drag out a narrow Tear Drop shape towards the bottom center.
Right click on the Vector layer you just created on the Layer Palette and Duplicate.
Do this 3 more times for a total of 5 Vector Layers.
Click on the + sign by each Vector layer. To move and rotate each of these images into postition, you need to click on the Tear Drop showing under the Vector (Copy of Vector) layer. Make sure only one is highlighted.

I placed my feathers in over under postion, but place your however you like.

I prefer leaving these as Vector Layer until I'm finished. It makes it easier to go back and change.

Wing
Preset Shapes - Tear Drop - Same settings
New Vector Layer
Drag out a narrow Tear Drop shape towards the right or left center.
Right click on the Vector layer you just created on the Layer Palette and Duplicate 4 more times for a total of 5 Vector Layers.

Move and rotate into position using same method as used on the tail.
This time I postitioned with the feathers overlapping from top to bottom.

Other Wing
I just want to duplicate the one I made. To do this we need to group the 5 images.
First click on each Tear Drop drap up to the top one to place under the previous one.

Hold down the Shift key and click on each of the Tear Drop layers for the wing. Make sure they are all highlighted.

Right click on any of these layers and Group.
Right click on the top Vector layer (Not the one that is grouped - above it.) and Duplicate.
Now click on Group 1 (highlighted on image below) under the Top Vector layer.
Image - Mirror (Ctrl+M) I deleted all the extra Vector layers (right click) that do not contain an image. You can tell because there is not a + sign by them. See image.

You can move it later with the Move Tool.
I went back, grouped the tail and deleted the extra Vector layers using the same process as above.

BODY
Preset Shapes - Tear Drop
Make sure you are back on the top layer
New Vector Layer
Drag out a Tear Drop shape in center for the body.

HEAD
Preset Shapes - Ellipse
New Vector Layer
Drag out an elliptical shape for the head.

This is how my image and Layer Palette look now.

I had to increase canvas size to 300 X 350.
Now you can go back to each layer under the Vector Layers. Click + sign to see. Use the Object Selection Tool
to move, resize, and/or rotate.
This is how mine looks right now. I did reduce size for display.

EYES
Preset Shapes - Ellipse
New Vector Layer
Change Background color to White
Drag out an elliptical shape for the eye.
Change Background color to Black
Drag out another elliptical shape a little smaller for the center of the eye.
Click on + sign
Hold down shift key and click on both layers under the vector layer.
Right click either layer and Group
Right click on Vector layer and Duplicate.
Click on + sign if it is showing instead of - sign of the Duplicated layer and click on the Group (mine is Group 3) layer under it to make sure it is the only layer highlighted.
Now you can grab the center of the image and move over for the other eye.

BEAK
Preset Shapes - Triangle
New Vector Layer
Change Background color to #F9D569
Drag out an triangular shape for the beak (botton toward top).
Node Edit - Pen Tool (PSP8) or Object Selector - Node Edit on Tool Option Palette.
Hold down Shift key on the keyboard and click on the top two nodes.

Right click on either node - Node Type - Symmetric
That's it for the node editing. Easy!
Use the Object Selection Tool to move, resize, and/or rotate.

CLAWS
Preset Shapes - Ellipse
New Vector Layer
Drag out three elliptical shapes for the claw.
Click on + sign
You may want to drag layers around so you have the center ellipse on the top of the layer.
Hold down shift key and click on all three layers under the vector layer.
Right click on any layer and Group
Right click on Vector layer and Duplicate.
Click on + sign if it is showing instead of - sign of the Duplicated layer and click on the Group (mine is Group 4) layer under it to make sure it is the only layer highlighted.
Now you can grab the center of the image and move over for the other claw.

You may delete background layer (bottom layer), right click on any layer, merge visible and SAVE!
