Jolly Jack-O'-Lantern
or Pumpkin

Please make sure you have read them.

This tutorial will not have selections!  No vectors either  * smile *.  You’ll be using the paint brush and retouch tools.  This will allow for some creativity and you can make various size pumpkins or jack-o’-lanterns.

Open New Image transparent 400 X 400

PUMPKIN
Layer1
Paint the following on your canvas.  If you would like a shorter pumpkin, you may want to increase the size.  For this one, I’m doing a narrower pumpkin.

Effects – Artistic – Colored Edges
     Luminance 5
     Blur 30
     Color #3E076D
     Intensity 5

SAVE

Layer2
Paint two more lines to the inside of the first.
Effects – Artistic – Colored Edges – Same settings
SAVE

Layer 3
Paint one more line down the center
Effects – Artistic – Colored Edges – Same settings
SAVE

Right click on any of the layers and Merge Visible

Use Retouch Tool –  Smudge ( 2nd tab) to smudge lines a little.
     Round
     Size 25
     Hardness  & Opacity 50
     Step 10
     Density 100
SAVE

Use Retouch Tool – Lighten RGB & Soften

 

STEM
New Layer – Drag below Merged layer on Layer Palette
Paint Stem using Color #70563E
     Shape Left Slash
     Size 25
     Other settings the same
Effects – Artistic – Colored Edges
     Luminance 5
     Blur 20
     Color #F0D2A8
     Intensity 10
Retouch Tool – Darken RGB – Same settings
Darken bottom side of the stem
SAVE

You have a pumpkin you can use!

LEAF
If you would like to create a leaf, this is what I did.
New Layer – Drag to bottom under stem
Paint leaf using Color #05A720 – Same setting.
For the tip change shape to Right Slash
Go below pumpkin at the top or the colored edge won’t look right
Effects – Artistic – Colored Edges 
     Color #3E076D
     Other settings the same
Retouch Tool – Push

Erase unwanted edge
Size will vary
Lower Hardness and Opacity to around 70 for a smoother edge
SAVE

I duplicated this layer – Moved to the top – Mirrored – Flipped 

CURL
I used Freehand Line – Size 2 – Color #894A07
Effects – 3D – Drop Shadow
     Vertical & Horizontal 1
     Opacity 100
     Blur 1
     Color Black
You may need to soften the tip where it meets the stem a little
SAVE

JACK – O’ – LANTERN
Be creative!!!  Make a face.  I’ll show you how you can make a simple face.
You may want to merge your layers.

EYES & NOSE
New Layer (Make sure it’s at the top)
Preset Shapes – Ellipse
Foreground - Null
Background - Color #FFFF00 
Drag out oval for the eye
Drop Shadow
     Vertical 2
     Horizontal 6
     Opacity 70
     Blur 1
     Color #934E03
Drop Shadow again
     Vertical & Horizontal 0
     Opacity 70
     Blur 20
     Color same
Repeat twice (Ctrl Y)
Right click on eye layer on Layer Palette – Duplicate
Drag over for the other eye
Duplicate again
Image – Resize 60 – Make sure all layers box is not checked
Drag down for nose

MOUTH
New Layer (Make sure it’s at the top)
Preset Shapes – Ellipse
Foreground - Null
Background - Color #FFFF00 
Drag out oval for the eye holding down SHIFT key
Selection Tool – Ellipse
Start at center top of mouth and hold down SHIFT key

Hit Delete Key on keyboard
Use Mover Tool to move into place if necessary
Drop Shadow
     Vertical 6
     Horizontal 2
     Opacity 70
     Blur 1
     Color same
Drop Shadow again
     Vertical & Horizontal 0
     Opacity 70
     Blur 20
     Color same
Repeat twice (Ctrl Y)
SAVE

You’re all finished!  Bet this would look really neat animated.
