New Image 185 X 260
Save and name in PSP format.
Don’t forget to SAVE often. I’ll remind you every so often, but I save before beginning a new layer each time (very good habit). The beard is included in zip file HERE

BASE
New Raster Layer
( I like to leave the bottom layer and flood fill to help see better. You can delete later.)
Preset Shape – Ellipse – only check Anti-alias
Foreground – Null
Background - #EACCAD
You will probably want to magnify.
Use coordinates (usually found on bottom bar).
Begin at coordinated (x:50 y:20) and drag out to (x:137 y:132).

EYE 1
New Raster Layer
Preset Shape – Ellipse – only check Anti-alias
Foreground – Null
Background - #F0EBE4
Begin at coordinated (x:105 y:67) and drag out to (x:117 y:73).
Effects – Drop Shadow
    Vertical & Horizontal 0 Opacity 100 Blur 2 Color #683B32
Use the Magic Wand and click anywhere outside the eye area.
Effects – Drop Shadow – Change Blur to 1 and leave the other settings as they are.
SAVE

EYE 2
New Raster Layer
Preset Shape – Ellipse – only check Anti-alias
Foreground – #7889C6 or your choice (Width 1)
Background - #9AA6D8 or your choice
Begin at coordinated (x:108 y:68) and drag out to (x:114 y:72).
Noise – Add 10 uniform
Select Paint Brush (Some of the settings apply to PSP8 only.)
  • Size 5
  • Hardness 20
  • Step 10
  • Density 100
  • Thickness 100
  • Rotation 0
  • Opacity 70
****NOTE: Density, Thickness, and Rotation will remain the same throughout the tutorial. I will not give these settings again.
Foreground Black
Place a dot in the center of the eye.
We will add a highlight later.

EYE 3
New Layer
Select Paint Brush
  • Size 1
  • Hardness 20
  • Step 1
  • Opacity 20
  • Other settings the same.
Foreground #683B32
Draw the details. (Each square equals 1 pixel.)

Use the Soften Brush to lightly go over these lines.
  • Size 2
  • Hardness 50
  • Step 1
  • Density 100
  • Opacity 50
SAVE

EYE 4
New Layer
Select Paint Brush
  • Opacity 40
  • Other settings the same
Foreground #F3E3D1
Paint area inside the eye lines.
(Yours will not be as heavily painted as mine. I made mine heavier so you could see better.)


EYE 5
Close background and base layer by clicking on the glasses (PSP7) or eye (PSP8) on the Layer palette. You should see a red X.
Right click on any of the other layers on the Layer Palette and Merge visible.
You may make other layer visible by clicking back on the red X on Layer Palette.
Double click on the layer on the Layer Palette and name eye.
Right click on Merged layer on Layer Palette – Duplicate
Image – Mirror (Ctrl+M)
Use Mover Tool to place.

EYE 6 Select Paint Brush
  • Hardness 50
  • Opacity 80
  • Other settings the same
Foreground #F3E3D1
Click on each eye layer and paint a dot in the upper right corner of eye for highlight.
SAVE

NOSE 1
Click back on the base layer on the Layer Palette.
New Layer
Select Paint Brush
  • Size 1
  • Hardness 20
  • Step 1
  • Opacity 75
Foreground color #683B32
Paint one side of nose. This is the pixel layout of mine. (1 square = 1 pixel)

Right click on this layer on the Layer Palette – Duplicate
Image – Mirror (Ctrl+M)
Use Mover Tool to move into place.
Close all the layers on the Layer Palette (Red X’s on glasses/eye) except for the two nose layers.
Right click on either layer and Merge visible.

Right click on the Merged layer on the Layer Palette – Duplicate.
Blur Gaussian Blur 4 on the top nose layer.
Click back on the nose layer below this one on the Layer Palette.
Lower Opacity to around 20 on the Layer Palette by sliding the bar.

You may make other layers visible.

NOSE 2
Click on the top nose layer on the Layer Palette
New Layer
Paint Brush
  • Opacity 20
  • Other settings the same
Paint in nostril area. I went over a few spots to darken.
Here is a magnified shot of mine.

Again, I just duplicated this side, mirrored, and moved into place on the other side.
Hide all the layers except the nose layers and merge visible.
SAVE

Now you could leave the nose like this or add some more detail to give it a little more depth by doing the next few steps.

NOSE 3
New Layer

Paint as shown in the image
(Yours will not show the marching ants. I selected the area for you to see better.)

CHEEKS
Click back on the base layer on the Layer Palette.

  • Step 1
  • Opacity 20
Foreground #B7442D
Paint cheeks (Ctrl+Z if you don’t like placement and try again.)

FOREHEAD 1
Click back on the base layer on the Layer Palette.
New Layer
Select Paint Brush
  • Size 5
  • Other settings the same
Foreground #F3E3D1 Paint some lines across the forehead

Blur – Gaussian Blur 1

FOREHEAD 2
Click back on the base layer on the Layer Palette.
New Layer
Select Paint Brush
  • Size 1
  • Other settings the same
Foreground #683B32
Paint some lines between the ones you just created

Blur – Gaussian Blur 1
Lower Opacity on the Layer Palette to around 50
SAVE

You may merge all the layers EXCEPT the background and base layers.

BEARD
Open the Santa beard ©Carla Polston image from the zip file.
Click on the layer on the Layer Palette and drag over to the Santa’s face you have been working on. (You can copy and paste, but I prefer this method.)
Use mover tool to place.

MOUTH
Click back on the base layer on the Layer Palette.
New Layer
Select Paint Brush
  • Size 40
  • Hardness 20
  • Step 1
  • Opacity 20
Foreground #B7442D
Paint lips.

Blur – Gaussian Blur 1.5

Delete background layer and merge the others.
