I'm going to show you two other styles and give you some information on how I created them.  On both of these, I only choose a base color.  Then I used the Retouch Tool with Lighten RGB, Darken RGB, Lightness Up, and Lightness Down.
You can use the same starting points for settings as the airbrush.
Dark: 20-30-50-30-30
Smaller size for more detail
Light: 10-20-30-30-30
You will need to vary settings depending on color and size of your image.
When using the retouch tool, you will work on the same layer you painted the base on.  You can switch back and forth between sizes, lighten, and darken.

The airbrush setting I used for the base was: 20-80-80-30-100.  Vary sized depending on the image you are working with.

You will add layers under head for back hair and on top for front hair.  The shadowing examples only show the top since you don't need as much detail on the back hair.

Darker Shadow

Lighter Shadow
Now would be a good time to empty the Command History.  Edit - Empty - Command History.

Now it's time to Smudge.  Select the Retouch Tool.  I used these settings: 14-50-50-25-100.
Start smudging.  Follow the contours of the shadow and highlights you created.  For the bangs, I used a smaller size.  You can always push back toward the hair.  I colorized my image when I was finished.

I used the same above method on this one.

I hope you find this information useful.  Just take your time and don't rush.  Play around and experiment.  I think you will be happy with the results you create.

Hope you have enjoyed this tutorial.
