This tutorial was written for more advanced users of PSP. Selections are provided, but you will be doing the detail work. You will need PSP version 8 or above to do this tutorial, but locations for effects and adjustments may be located in different areas.

Some of the illustrations are not to size.

This tutorial uses ALPHA CHANNELS. You will only see the canvas in the downloaded file. Make sure you have your Layer Palette visible. You will Load from the Alpha Channels.

Download Supplies HERE 
Save to a location of your choice.

Open Tole Angel ©2008 Carla Polston canvas.

Flood fill Layer 1 to help you see better. I use white. You can delete this layer before you merge.

You may want to make a color palette as you go. I use a square brush size of 20 and put a swatch color on my background layer or a new 50 X 250 image.

Wings
Click on right wing layer on Layer Palette
Selections – Load Selection from Alpha Channel -Selection#1
Flood Fill: Color of your choice
Airbrush around edge with a darker shade using the settings shown below. You may want to magnify a little.
I set the Background color with the color I'm using to fill and the Foreground color with the color I'm using to airbrush.

Continue loading each wing selection on its own layer, filling, and airbrushing around each edge for the right and left wing.
Right wing layers 1a through 1e - Selection #1 through Selection #5
Left wing is wing 2a through 2e - Selection #6 through Selection #10
(Ctrl+Z) to undo and respray if you do not like how it came out.
Merge wing layers together.

Neck
Click on neck-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #11
Flood Fill: #ffe3b7 or your choice.
New Layer Effects - 3D - Cutout

SAVE

Bottom Dress
Click on dress1-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #12
Flood Fill: Your choice.
We will come back and airbrush after finishing the top dress

Feet
Click on feet-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #13
Flood Fill: #ffe3b7 or your choice.
New Layer Effects - 3D - Cutout We will come back to airbrush under the bottom edge of the dress later.
SAVE

Top Dress
Click on dress2-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #14
Flood Fill: Lighter shade of bottom dress.
Airbrush Adjust any of the settings to work for you and the color you are using.
Use a darker shade of dress fill. I used a much darker shade for the example, so you could see the airbrushed area.
Slightly airbrush the right and left side of the dress.

selection Remember to SAVE often.
Selections - Edit Selection (The selection will have a red highlight.)
Click on the Mover Tool.
Use your arrow keys on the keyboard to move the edit selection to the right.
Click on the Raster Deform Tool.
Hold down the Shift key and slide top center node toward the left.
Selections - Edit Selection (The selection will clear highlight.)
New Raster Layer
Airbrush lower left side.
SAVE

Selections - Edit Selection
Click on the Mover Tool.
Use your arrow keys on the keyboard to move the edit selection to the left.
Click on the Raster Deform Tool.
Hold down the Shift key and slide top center node toward the right.
You can click on the center and move the selection more toward the left if you need to. Selections - Edit Selection

Click on the Raster Deform Tool.
slide left middle node and right middle node in.
Click on center top node and side to the right.
Selections - Edit Selection
Airbrush lower right and lower left.
(Ctrl+Z) to undo and respray if you do not like how it came out.
You can also use the Eraser Tool with a lower Hardness and Opacity to erase some of the extra spray if you want to.

Repeat the above one more time to narrow more and airbrush.

Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #12
Selections - Invert - Tap the Delete key on your keyboard to get rid of the overspray.
If you worked on more than one layer to airbrush, click on each layer on the Layer Palette and delete overspray.
Optional ~ Click back on dress-cp layer and use your Lighten/Darken Brush to lighten areas of the dress if you would like to. Play with the settings to get the adjustments you need for the color you used. Here are the settings I used.
  • Sahpe: circle
  • Size varies for the area you are in
  • Hardness: 0
  • Step: 25
  • Density and Thickness: 100
  • Rotation: 0
  • Opacity: 65
  • Match Mode: RGB

Bottom Dress
Click back on dress1-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #12
Airbrush darker shade of lower dress around bottom edge of top dress - size 40.
Airbrush around lower edge of bottom dress - size 20.
Airbrush around edges of feet - size 10.

SAVE

Thumbs
Click on thumbs-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #15
Flood Fill: #ffe3b7 or your choice.
New Layer Effects - 3D - Cutout SAVE

Wire
Click on wire-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #16
Flood Fill: Your choice.
Add stars, hearts or decoration of your choice.
SAVE

Hands
Click on hands-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #17
Flood Fill: #ffe3b7 or your choice.
New Layer Effects - 3D - Cutout We will come back to airbrush under the bottom edge of the dress later so do not merge these layers.

New Layer
Seletion Tool - Ellipse
Drag out an elliptical shape over right hand.
Slightly airbrush along bottom for a finger line.

Right click on this layer and Duplicate twice.
Use the Mover Tool to move and place other fingers.
Merge down duplicated layers to the first finger detail line.
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #13
Selections - Invert - Tap the Delete key to get rid of any overspray. SAVE
Repeat the above method for the left hands.
Remeber to start on a New Layer.
SAVE
Left Sleeve
Click on left sleeve-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #18
Flood Fill: Same color as dress.
Airbrush right edge of sleeve with same darker shade used on dress.
  • Size: around 35
  • Step: around 35
  • Other settings as they are.
Lower Opacity some to lightly spray left side of the sleeve. Make a note of the opacity setting. You will want to change it back later.
Optional ~ Click back on left sleeve-cp layer and use the Lighten Brush with same setting to highlight sleeve slightly.
SAVE
Right Sleeve
Click on right sleeve-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #19
Flood Fill: Same color as dress.
Airbrush lightly left edge of sleeve with same darker shade used on dress with same setting.
Raise the Opacity some to the same setting you had before lowering it and spray right side of the sleeve. Make a note of the opacity setting. You will want to change it back later.
Optional ~ Click back on right sleeve-cp layer and use the Lighten Brush with same setting to highlight sleeve slightly.
Click back on dress2-cp layer.
New Raster layer
Lower Size to around 18 and Opacity.
Airbrush under the edge of the right sleeve and hand.
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #14
Selections - Invert - Tap Delete key on keyboard to get rid of overspray.
SAVE
Click back on Merged wing layer on Layer Palette.
Use Magic Wand and click on background area of the image.
Selection - Invert
You should have a selection around the wings.
New Raster layer
Airbrush with the darker wing shading under bottom edge of right and left sleeve to create a shadow on the wings.
I used various sizes with the airbrush.
Adjust Opacity for colors you are using.
Remember (Ctrl+Z) to undo if you need to. I use this a lot.

Click back on the layer above hands-cp layer on Layer Palette. This should be the cutout layer.
Use the Eraser Tool to erase the upper cutout area on the left hand.
New Raster layer
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #17
Airbrush with the darker hand shading under lower edge of right and left sleeve to create a shadow on the hands.
I used Airbrush size 15.
Adjust Opacity for colors you are using.
Repeat the above to airbrush a shadow on a New Layer above thumb layer with Alpha Channel Selection #15
Head
Click on head-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #20
Flood Fill: Same color as other body parts.
We will comp back and airbrush later.

Hair
Click on hair left-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #21
Flood Fill: Your choice
Click on hair right-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #22
Flood Fill: Your choice
Since there are a lot of curves here, I used the Lighten/Darken brush to detail.
Here is how I started out. Play with opacity depending on color you use. You may want to vary sizes a little as you work. You can also right click to change between lighten and darken. Play around and detail as much as you would like.

Face
Click on lashes-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #23
Flood Fill: Your choice
Effects - 3D - Drop Shadow Click on nose-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #23
Flood Fill: darker skin color
Effects - 3D - Drop Shadow Click on mouth-cp on Layer Palette
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #23
Flood Fill: Your choice
New Layer
Effects - 3D - Cutout Add some cheek color if you would like to a New Raster layer just above the head-cp layer.
SAVE

Click back on the head-cp layer.
New Raster layer
Selections – Load from Alpha Channel – Selection #20
Airbrush around the edge of har to create a shadow.
I varied the size between 4 and 9.
Optional ~ Use the Lighten Brush to lighten nose and eyelids using a smaller size.

SAVE

Wow!!! You are finished. You may delete the background layer and merge. I like to save to original with the details merged down to each layer, but not all the layers merged. This way you can colorize easier.
