I wrote this in PSP9, but you should be able to do it in other versions if you are familiar with the program.

Base
Base

Grab hold of the base image and drag over to your PSP workspace to use as a placement guide.
This image will be your working base.
You may want to magnify to around 500% - 600%.

Save As (F12) and Name
I have this in png format. You will want to save as psp format.

MAGIC WAND SETTING
Tree Bark
1 Click on the Background Layer on the Layer Palette.
Select the tree image using Magic Wand
New Layer
Flood Fill (F) #8d6a3d
Float (Ctrl+F)
Effects - 3D - Cutout
  • Vertical: -1
  • Horizontal: 1
  • Opacity: 100
  • Blur: 5
  • Shadow Color: #404040
Select None (Ctrl+D)
To get a variation of trees, you may want to duplicate (Shift+D) this image a couple of times then spray the needles and snow on each image.
In my image, I just duplicated the same one.
SAVE
Pine Needles
2 Image - Canvas Size
  • Width: 60 pixels
  • Height: 80 pixels
  • Placement:
    Top: 11
    Bottom: 0
    Left: 12
    Rigth: 13
New Raster layer
Foreground:#404040
Use Paint brush
  • Round
  • Size 8 - 10
  • Hardness: 80
  • Step: 25
  • Density: 1
  • Thickness: 100
  • Rotation: 0
  • Opacity: 80
Spray sections of needles along branches.
SAVE
Snow
3 New Raster layer
Foreground: #e0e0e0
Background: White
Use Paint brush - Change:
  • Size 4
  • Step: 1
  • Other settings the same
Spray patches of snow alternating between left and right mouse buttons to use both colors.
SAVE

Delete the base image and Merge Visible.
